About PFCS

A Visionary Response to Contemporary Problems

Personal and Family Counseling Services of Tuscarawas Valley, Inc. is a private, non-profit family service agency that assists individual and families by providing many social services, such as counseling, support, advocacy and education, focusing on prevention as well as treatment. Our services are available to all residents of Tuscarawas and Carroll counties.

We began our mission of repairing relationships and building strong families in Tuscarawas and Carroll counties more than 35 years ago thanks to the visionary efforts of several community leaders. At that time, local physicians, lawyers, judges and clergy had become aware that many traditional social support resources were unable to address all of the needs of a family struggling in an increasingly complex society. Often, a troubled individual would also be entangled in a frayed web of deteriorating interpersonal relationships at home, school and/or on the job. Helping such a person turn his or her life around increasingly required an agency that provided multidisciplinary services. Under the leadership of these visionary leaders, Personal & Family Services of Tuscarawas Valley, Inc. was formed as a private, non-profit agency in 1970, with two part-time professionals. For years, the agency drew heavily on the volunteerism of clergy, teachers and private counselors.

PFCS Today

Over the years, PFCS has helped thousands of children, adults and their families overcome or prevent serious social and emotional problems and forge stronger, more positive human relationships. We've expanded to a staff of nearly 62 full- and part-time employees in a newly expanded facility in New Philadelphia, Ohio. In 2006, Harbor House, Inc, a domestic violence shelter and substance abuse halfway house merged with PFCS to enhance the quality of services provided to the community by both organizations.
